CEY ADAMS, DEPARTURE: 40 Years of Art and Design

Curated by Liza Quiñonez of Street Theory

A retrospective of Cey Adams' illustrious forty-year career as a visionary artist, a cultural pioneer, and innovative designer.

Cey Adams’ roots as a graffiti artist in the ‘70s and ’80s laid the foundation for his creative vision. Over the next four decades, Adams would go on to create visual identities for some of Hip-Hop’s foundational acts as the founding Creative Director of Def Jam Recordings and establish a robust contemporary fine art practice.

For forty+ years, Adams has been at the forefront of multiple cultural art movements and for the first time ever the highlights of his journey will be on display for all to see, featuring:

  • 30+ original artworks

  • 30+ photography archives by and from the Cey Adams Archives, Martha Cooper, Janette Beckman & Ricky Powell,

  • Collaborations with Gary Lichtenstein Editions, Janette Beckman, Lucy Tupu Studio, Mattel Creations, Levi's

  • and more

The singular focus of my art is to be a bridge that brings people closer together. This career retrospective is a reflection of how graffiti, street art, and Hip-Hop have unified people and in turn created a movement with lasting impact on popular culture.
